Electric vehicle adoption keeps rising rapidly, with around 7.8 million EVs registered globally in 2022. In this overview, the focus is on city-friendly models—cars designed to handle daily commuting in urban environments, especially in low-emission zones where traditional gasoline and diesel vehicles face restrictions.
Here’s a selection of seven widely popular electric cars built with city driving in mind. These models are compact, efficient, and ideal for navigating crowded streets while reducing environmental impact. All support both standard and fast charging, with many capable of reaching 80% battery in roughly 30 minutes. Their driving ranges generally exceed 200 km, and some even go beyond 300 km, making occasional longer trips outside the city entirely practical.
It’s also worth noting that owning a home charger isn’t essential for daily EV use. Many drivers rely on charging options at workplaces, public parking facilities, shopping centers, hotels, restaurants, or roadside charging stations, which are becoming increasingly common.
Fiat 500e – a strong competitor in the EV market
Among small electric cars, the Fiat 500e stands out as one of the most successful. It has even rivaled top-selling models like Tesla in certain markets, ranking as the fourth best-selling EV in Europe in 2022. It represents a significant portion of Fiat’s overall sales and is also available in a convertible version, adding extra versatility and style.
One of its biggest strengths is range. The 118 hp version can travel over 300 km (around 320 km claimed by Fiat), allowing several days of driving before recharging. There’s also a smaller battery option (21.3 kW), offering 95 hp and about 190 km of range.
Peugeot e-208 – sporty and efficient
The Peugeot e-208 is a standout in both performance and popularity. Its updated GT version brings improved equipment, a sportier look, and enhanced driving dynamics.
This version features a 48.1 kW lithium-ion battery delivering 156 hp, with a driving range of up to 400 km under WLTP standards. Fast charging at up to 100 kW allows the battery to go from 20% to 80% in just 25 minutes.
Mini Cooper SE – classic style meets electric power
The electric Mini Cooper retains the charm of its traditional design while introducing modern EV technology. One key difference is its fully digital dashboard. It also uses an efficient heat recovery system, reducing energy consumption by up to 75% compared to standard heating.
Performance is strong, with a 184 hp motor and 270 Nm of torque, though top speed is limited to 150 km/h. Its 32.6 kW battery provides a range of about 234 km, and fast charging can reach 80% in around 35 minutes using a 50 kW charger.
Renault ZOE – a proven urban EV
First introduced in 2013, the Renault ZOE has become one of Europe’s most successful electric city cars. Now in its third generation, it offers improved performance and updated features.
It is equipped with a 50 kW battery (with a 40 kW option available), delivering a range close to 400 km (about 389 km claimed). Power output varies between 110 and 135 hp depending on the version. Its “Chameleon” charging system adapts to different power sources, and fast charging can add around 150 km of range in just 30 minutes.
Opel Corsa-e – practical and user-friendly
The Opel Corsa-e combines a clean design with modern technology to enhance comfort and safety. It shares its platform with the Peugeot e-208, as both belong to the same automotive group.
Available in different trims, it features a 136 hp motor and 260 Nm of torque, paired with a 50 kW battery. This setup provides a driving range of over 300 km (up to 359 km under optimal conditions) and allows charging to 80% in about half an hour.
Hyundai Kona EV – impressive range for an urban SUV
The Hyundai Kona Electric blends SUV practicality with strong electric performance. It features a powerful 204 hp motor and 255 Nm of torque.
With battery options up to 64 kW, it offers an impressive range exceeding 460 km (up to 484 km combined, and even higher in city driving). Its spacious interior comfortably accommodates five passengers and includes advanced technology and safety systems, making it suitable for both city use and longer journeys.
Dacia Spring – affordable and accessible
The Dacia Spring stands out as one of the most budget-friendly electric cars available today. Its popularity is largely due to its excellent value for money.
The base version delivers 45 hp with a 27.4 kW battery and a range of about 230 km—sufficient for everyday city driving. A newer version, the Spring Extreme, introduces a 65 hp motor for better acceleration while maintaining similar range. With pricing around €22,000 depending on the market, it remains one of the most affordable EV options currently available.
