Oil painting is a medium that has stood the test of time, producing some of the most iconic works of art in history, such as Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, and Vermeer’s Girl With a Pearl Earring. But have you ever wondered about the origins of oil paints or the unique materials that were once used in their creation? Here are five fascinating facts about oil painting that might surprise you.

Ancient Beginnings

Although many associate oil painting with the Renaissance period due to the masterpieces of Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci, the use of oil paints dates back even further. The earliest known oil paintings were discovered in Bamiyan, Afghanistan, where Buddhist monks in the 7th Century AD used oils from walnuts and poppies to bind their pigments when painting murals inside caves.

A Vibrant and Surprising History of Colors

While today we rely on synthetic pigments for oil paints, this wasn’t always the case. The history of oil paint colors is full of unexpected stories. For instance, Indian yellow, a bright and striking pigment, was originally made from the urine of cows fed on mango leaves. Another notable color, Tyrian Purple, prized by the Romans, was produced from the glands of sea snails. And let’s not forget Mummy Brown – a pigment made from the ground-up remains of Egyptian mummies!

The Science Behind Drying Paints

Oil paints don’t truly dry; instead, they set and harden. The process can take anywhere from hours to weeks depending on the layer thickness and oil binding agent. The secret to the ideal drying rate was discovered by the Renaissance painter Jan van Eyck. He found that a mixture of linseed and nut oils worked best, and he kept this formula a closely guarded secret until just before his death, when he finally shared it with fellow artist Antonello Da Messina.

The Price of a Masterpiece

When it comes to the most expensive oil paintings, few can compete with Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, which is valued at an astounding 867 million dollars. However, selling this painting is illegal under France’s Heritage Code Law, as public museums are required to maintain the artwork as public property.

The Invention of the Paint Tube and Its Impact on Impressionism

Before the invention of the modern paint tube, artists had to mix their pigments by hand and store them in pigs’ bladders. This labor-intensive process made outdoor painting very difficult. That all changed in 1841 when John Goffe Rand invented the collapsible artist's paint tube. This innovation revolutionized the art world, enabling artists to easily transport their paints and work outdoors. This, in turn, played a crucial role in the rise of Impressionism, allowing artists to paint en plein air, capturing the light and atmosphere of their surroundings.
