Location & General Info

Situated in Ninh Binh Province, in northern Vietnam, near the southern edge of the Red River Delta.
The site spans about 6,226 hectares, with a surrounding buffer zone of 6,026 hectares.
About 14,000 people live within the property limits; most are small-scale farmers. Much of the site, however, remains wild and relatively untouched.
What Makes Trang An Special (Outstanding Universal Value)

Natural Landscape Features

The landscape is dominated by towering limestone karst peaks (karst towers and cones), many valleys (some partly submerged), steep cliffs, and an intricate network of subterranean waterways.
The geology is remarkable: the karst massif has experienced repeated inundation by the sea during past geological periods, but has since emerged. This means there are evidence of sea levels rising and falling—marine shells, beach deposits, erosion notches, etc.
The combination of lush tropical forest cover, water-filled depressions, caves, rivers, and rice paddies create visually striking contrasts: green vegetation, grey stone, blue-green water, and vibrant sky.

Cultural / Historical Importance

Archaeological findings from caves reveal continuous human occupation going back 30,000 years. This includes hunter-gatherer groups who endured significant environmental and climatic changes (including sea inundation).
The site also includes Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam during the 10th-11th centuries. Numerous temples, pagodas, villages, and paddy fields are interwoven in the landscape, showing how humans have long coexisted with and adapted to this environment.

Criteria for World Heritage Listing

Trang An meets three of UNESCO’s criteria:
Criterion (v): Demonstrates how human communities have adapted to changing climatic, environmental, and geographic conditions over tens of thousands of years.
Criterion (vii): Outstanding natural beauty, with dramatic landscapes, scenery, and sensory experience (caves, waterways, cliffs, forest)… offering serenity, variety of colour, light & shadow.
Criterion (viii): Exceptional geological features; in particular, evolved tower-karst landscape, transitional karst forms, caves, subterranean water systems, etc.

Conservation, Integrity, and Management

Most of the property is under formal protection: it lies within three protected zones (Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, Trang An-Tam Coc-Bich Dong Scenic Landscape, Hoa Lu Special-Use Forest).
Archaeological sites are well preserved; many remain in original condition.
The site is managed by the Trang An Landscape Complex Management Board, supported by government laws, decrees, and a legally binding management plan. Zoning is used to balance conservation with tourism, habitation, and local livelihoods.
Challenges include controlling tourism pressure, managing village growth, protecting archaeological resources, maintaining visitor services, and protecting natural resources in the buffer zones.

The Healing Power of Art and Drawing

The Healing Power of Art and Drawing

Stuck one evening in heavy traffic on Santa Monica Boulevard, exhausted physician Kurlen Payton, MD, noticed a green-and-gold ficus tree glowing under streetlights. At the time, he was in the early stage of his career as a neonatal intensive care specialist at Cedars-Sinai and raising two young children. That brief moment inspired him to make a quick sketch—and that single drawing marked the beginning of a lasting habit.

Hydrangea: The Beauty of Repeat Flowering Plants

Hydrangea: The Beauty of Repeat Flowering Plants

Recent advances in hydrangea breeding have created an impressive range of repeat-blooming varieties. Traditional hydrangeas generally form their flower buds on growth produced during the previous year, while many newer cultivars can develop buds on both old wood and new wood. In Portland, this can result in a long flowering season that begins in June and continues until the first frost.
