Frozen Fruit Dessert
If vibrant landscapes filled with rich colors appeal to you, this watercolor lesson is a wonderful project to try. It's a relaxing painting that can easily be completed in a single afternoon and is perfect for beginners exploring watercolor techniques.
One of the best things about this project is that you don't need a reference photograph. You can create your own unique sunset colors, mountain outlines, and palm tree silhouettes, making every painting completely original.
You can follow along with a video demonstration or use the written instructions below. No matter which method you choose, enjoy the creative process and feel free to share your finished artwork along with any questions or feedback.
Materials
Watercolors
Winsor & Newton Watercolors:
Winsor Orange
Ultramarine Violet
Payne's Gray
Permanent Rose
Paper and Brushes
High-quality watercolor paper such as Fabriano Artistico or Arches 140 lb cold-pressed paper is recommended. This demonstration was completed on Fabriano paper, although both brands perform equally well.
For brushes, synthetic and sable-blend options work beautifully. A large wash brush, a medium round brush, and a medium flat brush are all you'll need for this painting.
Additional Supplies
Masking tape
A rigid drawing board
A palette with separate mixing areas
Any basic watercolor palette design will work, whether round or rectangular.
Painting Process
Step 1: Prepare Your Paper and Paints
Trim your watercolor paper to your preferred dimensions and securely tape all four sides to a sturdy board. Be sure to leave enough painted area to fit within your mat if you plan to frame the artwork later.
Squeeze the watercolor paints into separate wells of your palette and mix each color with water until smooth. Avoid thick paint clumps that could interfere with your washes. Prepare enough paint in advance so you won't run out while working.
Step 2: Wet the Surface
Using a large wash brush loaded with clean water, thoroughly moisten the entire sheet of paper. Ensure the surface is evenly wet before applying any color.
Step 3: Paint the Sunset Sky
While the paper remains damp, use a medium round brush to apply Permanent Rose across most of the sheet. Leave some areas near the top untouched so Winsor Orange can be added later.
Tilt and rotate your board as needed to encourage the colors to flow naturally and blend into one another. Allow this first layer to dry completely.
Step 4: Create the Mountain Range
Carefully dampen the lower portion of the painting again without disturbing too much of the dried rose layer.
Load your medium brush with Ultramarine Violet and begin painting mountain peaks just above the horizon line. Allow the pigment to spread gently into the wet area beneath it, creating soft transitions and preventing hard streaks.
Continue adding violet paint downward through the mountain shapes until the desired depth of color is achieved. Leave the painting to dry thoroughly before moving to the next stage.
Step 5: Add the Palm Trees
Lightly sketch the palm trees and trunks with a pencil.
Using Payne's Gray and the edge of a medium flat brush, paint the palm fronds. The paint mixture should be thick enough to hold its shape; overly diluted paint will not produce crisp marks.
Press the flat edge of the brush against the paper to form the main sections of the fronds. Then use a corner of the brush to pull outward strokes that create the individual leaf segments.
Use the flat side of the brush again to paint slender palm trunks. Small angled strokes added with the brush corner can create the textured ridges and details along the trunks.
Final Result
Once the palm trees are complete, your desert sunset watercolor is finished. The combination of glowing sunset colors, soft violet mountains, and dark palm silhouettes creates a striking and atmospheric landscape.
Conclusion
This simple watercolor project is an excellent way to practice washes, color blending, and silhouette techniques while creating a beautiful desert scene. Because the composition is flexible, you can experiment with different sky colors, mountain shapes, and tree arrangements to make the painting your own.
Most importantly, enjoy the process and don't be afraid to explore your creativity. Every sunset is unique, and every painting can be as well.
