Flowers have been a enduring inspiration for artists, offering a glimpse into nature’s timeless beauty and profound symbolism. From Van Gogh’s vibrant sunflowers to Monet’s serene Water Lilies series, these 10 famous flower paintings pay tribute to how artists have captured their splendor through art.

1. Jan Davidsz de Heem

De Heem aimed to capture the true essence of flowers, fruits, and grains in his still lifes by studying them directly from nature—focusing on the translucency and sheen of leaves as they glistened with light.
He began his training under floral still-life painter Balthasar van der Ast in Utrecht before moving to Leiden in 1626, and later to Antwerp, where his work flourished with greater brilliance and elegance.

2. Georgia O’Keeffe

Georgia O’Keeffe was renowned for her flower paintings, which became her signature works. In particular, her depictions of red canna lilies emerged as an iconic image in her oeuvre.
Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 was crafted in an experimental style, challenging traditional perceptions of flowers.
O’Keeffe used the stamens and reproductive parts of flowers as symbols of feminine sexuality in her work—though she never intended this interpretation, her viewers perceived it that way.

3. Vincent van Gogh

Van Gogh relied heavily on sunflowers as both inspiration and a source of income, painting them at an increasingly rapid pace to refine his sense of color and brushwork, while also earning a living.
He often included roses, irises, lilacs, and carnations in his nature paintings, enjoying the challenge of capturing them at every stage of development—from fresh blooms to withered petals. This approach beautifully showcases Van Gogh’s free-figuration style.

4. Claude Monet

Monet’s most celebrated flower paintings are his Water Lilies series, which he worked on for 30 years in his garden at Giverny. These vivid works depict an iris bed surrounding an elegant water pond, framed by tall trees and pathways.
While Mary Cassatt didn’t create many still lifes, her oil painting of lilac flowers resting serenely on a windowsill is a standout. The harmonious blend of colors creates a relaxing yet captivating atmosphere, and the intricate detail in this mesmerizing piece makes a striking statement about its subject.

5. Maria van Oosterwijck

Maria van Oosterwijck (known by her nickname Oosterwijk) was a highly accomplished Dutch Golden Age painter of flower works, gaining great fame for her skill in depicting delicate petals. She trained under Jan Davidsz de Heem before opening her own workshop across from Willem van Aelst’s studio in Delft.
Her works exhibit deep, brilliant colors. She often painted flowers at different stages of blooming and included insects like bees, dragonflies, and butterflies; other elements such as books, musical instruments, and coins also made appearances in her pieces.

6. Utagawa Hiroshige

Hiroshige rose to fame for his masterful use of the Ukiyo-e woodblock print tradition, creating vibrant landscape and portrait works characterized by vivid hues. Van Gogh greatly admired him and drew inspiration to create pieces like his Almond Blossom as tributes.
This mesmerizing work features hibiscus flowers arranged into an animal skull motif, symbolizing death and decay—recalling Roman sepulchral art in its allegory of mortality. Like such classical works, flower paintings convey more than mere aesthetic value; they can communicate deeper messages. These artists’ floral works showcase timeless beauty and profound symbolism that resonates globally, transcending cultural barriers to depict universal emotions and aspirations.

7. Edouard Vuillard

Vuillard was familiar with domestic interiors and gardens from his mother’s work as a dressmaker; additionally, he became involved in theater, painting sets and designing programs.
In this small decorative painting, Vuillard employs a variety of brushstrokes: decorative dots, short swirls, and squiggles blend with broad strokes to create an intricate surface rich in texture and nuance.
Vuillard later moved away from avant-garde innovation toward the more familiar forms and rhetoric of nineteenth-century Realism, resulting in paintings that were richer and more detailed than before.

8. Mary Cassatt

Mary Cassatt’s still-life painting of a lilac bouquet showcases her talent for arranging delicate blooms into an eye-catching composition.

9. Alex Katz

American figurative painter Alex Katz—famous for his large-scale works—explores the timeless allure of flowers through his art. He first created close-up floral pieces in the late 1960s, then shifted his technique in the early 2000s to cover canvases entirely with masses of blooms.
Thaddaeus Ropac Seoul recently hosted his first Asian flower exhibition, featuring previously unseen works from his flower series as well as portraits with botanical backgrounds.

10. Henri Fantin-Latour

Henri Fantin-Latour was known for his rose paintings, which evoke images of nineteenth-century drawing rooms and cultured discussions through their elegant floral arrangements. This still life of roses and irises highlights his use of vibrant, clashing hues.
