Anthurium: Easy Houseplants That Offer Long-Lasting Color
Although I have spent plenty of time caring for plants outdoors, I had almost no experience maintaining houseplants. The curious nature of my cats made keeping indoor greenery or even fresh-cut flowers nearly impossible. After one memorable accident involving a shattered glass vase, I decided that cats and indoor plants were not a suitable combination.

Years later, everything changed when I received an Anthurium as a thank-you gift after giving a presentation for a neighborhood association in 2015. By that time, my cats were no longer around, so I could have brought the plant home. Instead, I placed it in my office, where it has continued to thrive. With minimal attention, the plant has rewarded me with beautiful, long-lasting colour.
Understanding the Anthurium Plant
The name Anthurium comes from two Greek words: “anthos,” meaning flower, and “oura,” meaning tail. This plant belongs to the Arum family and is recognized for its unusual flower structure, which consists of a spathe and a spadix.
The brightly coloured section of the plant is actually a modified leaf called a spathe. Rising from the centre of the spathe is the spadix, a vertical structure covered with many tiny flowers. The tail-like appearance of the spadix explains the connection to the Greek word “oura.”
Anthurium Flower Colours and Appearance
Anthuriums are commonly known as flamingo flowers because their spathes are often found in shades of red and pink. However, modern varieties are available in a wide range of colours.
When visiting a local nursery, it is easy to be impressed by the many choices available. Anthuriums can have vivid red, bright white, soft salmon, pink, or even combinations of white, green, and pink. Their variety of colours makes it easy to find a plant that matches different interior styles and decorating themes.
Anthurium Care Tips
Light Requirements
Anthuriums grow best when placed in bright light that is indirect rather than direct. Providing the right amount of light encourages healthy growth and increases the chance of producing flowers.
Watering Needs
Water the plant thoroughly, but allow the upper layer of soil to become slightly dry before watering again. Anthuriums prefer consistent moisture but do not tolerate constantly waterlogged soil.
Fertilizing
Anthuriums do not require heavy feeding. In fact, they can perform well with very little fertilizer. My own Anthurium has never received fertilizer since I first got it in 2015, yet it continues to bloom several times each year.
Repotting and Soil Requirements
It is best to wait until the roots have filled the current container before moving the plant into a larger pot. Since Anthuriums are tropical plants that naturally grow as epiphytes, they prefer a loose, airy growing medium with excellent drainage.
A recommended soil mixture includes peat moss, pine bark, and perlite. For my plant, I used a combination of half cactus potting mix and half orchid mix, which provides both good drainage and organic material.
A well-balanced planting medium helps prevent excess moisture around the roots while supporting healthy growth.
Safety Considerations
The main disadvantage of Anthuriums is that they are poisonous to both humans and pets if eaten. Many common houseplants have some level of toxicity, but they generally do not create problems when handled responsibly.
Households with young children or animals should take extra precautions by placing Anthuriums in locations where curious hands or pets cannot easily reach and chew the leaves. With proper placement and care, these colourful tropical plants can be a beautiful and rewarding addition to an indoor space.
