Moose: The Largest Deer Species in the World
Moose are the biggest animals in the deer family. Adult males, called bulls, are especially recognizable because of their massive antlers, which can span almost 6 feet (1.8 meters) from one side to the other. Their faces are long and slender, ending in large, drooping muzzles that project beyond the mouth. Under the throat is a loose section of skin known as a bell, which hangs down beneath the neck and sways as the animal moves.

Summer and Winter Adaptations
Because moose stand so tall, their bodies are well suited to reaching vegetation above the ground. They commonly browse on taller grasses, shrubs, and tree branches, as lowering their large bodies to feed on plants close to the ground can be challenging.
When winter arrives and available food decreases, moose rely heavily on woody vegetation, bushes, and pinecones. Their large, sturdy hooves can be used to clear away snow and expose mosses and lichens hidden underneath. The broad shape of their feet also acts much like a pair of natural snowshoes, allowing them to cross deep snow, soft terrain, and muddy wetlands with less risk of sinking.
During summer, northern parts of North America, Europe, and Asia offer moose an abundance of vegetation. Once frozen conditions recede, these animals often enter lakes, rivers, and marshes to browse on aquatic plants growing both above and beneath the water.
For their enormous body size, moose are remarkably capable swimmers. They can cover several miles while traveling through water and can even dive completely below the surface. Some moose are able to remain underwater for 30 seconds or more while searching for aquatic food.
Moose can also move quickly and effectively across land. During short runs, they may reach speeds of approximately 35 miles per hour (56 km/h), while a sustained trot can reach around 20 miles per hour (32 km/h).
Breeding Behavior
The primary breeding period for moose takes place during September and October. At this time of year, male bulls make deep and powerful vocalizations to attract females.
Bulls normally spend much of the year alone, but during the mating season they may come together and compete for females. Males can use their large antlers in physical contests with rivals as they attempt to gain breeding opportunities.
Once mating has taken place, males and females separate and return to their largely solitary routines. They may occasionally feed in the same general areas, but they usually have little close interaction outside the breeding period.
Female moose give birth during spring and generally produce one or two calves. Newborn calves weigh about 30 pounds (14 kilograms), but their growth is extremely rapid. Within roughly five days of being born, a calf can already run faster than a person.
Young moose stay with their mothers until the following breeding season. During this period, they gradually develop the abilities and knowledge needed to survive independently before eventually separating from their mothers.
