Rare Classic Wagons

Wagons have long been celebrated as some of the most practical vehicles ever built. By stretching the roofline of a standard sedan, classic wagons offer generous cargo space while maintaining a lower center of gravity, which translates to nimble handling and fun driving dynamics. Despite their versatility and enjoyment factor, modern automotive trends have shifted heavily toward towering SUVs and crossovers, leaving wagons increasingly rare.

The SUV craze shows no signs of slowing down. Back in 1975, sedans and wagons made up nearly 80% of U.S. vehicle sales. Today, that role has largely been overtaken by SUVs and trucks, which have grown to account for roughly 80% of new vehicle sales since 2011, gradually pushing smaller sedans and their long-roof variants off the market.

Among collectors, classic wagons are enjoying a resurgence. Their charm, timeless design, and unique presence make them highly sought after. As the old saying goes, “They don’t make them like they used to.” Here’s a look at 15 standout classic wagons that are turning heads in today’s market:

1951 Ford Country Squire Wagon

A true woodie, this two-door 1951 Ford Country Squire Wagon retains its authentic wood paneling—none of the fake plastic “wood” seen on later models. Powered by a 350-cid Chevy Vortec engine, it includes tasteful upgrades like a Fatman Fabrications front end, an 8.8-inch rear end, power steering, four-wheel disc brakes, and a completely refreshed interior. Driven only 500 miles since its rebuild, this wagon is a gem.

1979 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Station Wagon

This family hauler exudes charm and nostalgia. The 1979 Caprice Classic Station Wagon features woodgrain trim and a 350 V8 engine. Recent maintenance includes new brakes, water pump, radiator, valve cover gasket, and muffler. Purchased from an estate sale, it retains much of its original condition.

1964 Mercury Colony Park

A California classic, this Mercury Colony Park blends vintage style with modern performance. Its blue wood-paneled exterior hides a 390-cid V8 with a Holley Sniper EFI system for smoother, more efficient power delivery. The automatic transmission ensures a comfortable and exhilarating driving experience.

1959 Chevrolet Brookwood Nomad

Professionally restored with a frame-off rebuild, this 1959 Brookwood Nomad is a restomod that keeps its classic appeal while adding modern conveniences. The LS3 engine produces 480 horsepower, paired with a six-speed manual transmission.

1964 Chevrolet Chevy II Nova Station Wagon

A one-of-a-kind mild restomod, this Chevy II Nova has only 1,000 miles since its frame-off restoration. It features V8 power and rides smoothly with no vibrations. The seller describes the craftsmanship as “simply spectacular.”

1963 Volvo 122S B22

Rare and original, this two-owner 1963 Volvo 122S B22 served as a daily driver until recently. Well-maintained with a fuel system overhaul, it’s in good running order. Though the paint has some blemishes, a fresh coat would make it a showstopper.

1953 Willys Station Wagon

Meticulously restored with a body-off rebuild, this Willys features heated leather seats, a lamb’s wool headliner, Pioneer audio with Bluetooth, map lighting, USB ports, and a rebuilt replacement F-head engine. Rust is absent, making it a remarkable find.

1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Wagon

A muscle car in wagon form, this Placer Gold Chevelle SS Wagon is powered by a rebuilt 402-cubic-inch V8 producing 350 horsepower, paired with a T-10 4-speed manual transmission and a 10-bolt rear end.

1967 Buick Sport Wagon GS

This GS wagon boasts a panoramic sky roof, a 350-cubic-inch small-block V8 with four-barrel carbs, and a Star Wars-style air cleaner. Rust-free and ready to drive, it combines luxury with classic muscle appeal.

1956 Ford Parklane Two-Door Wagon

Custom and immaculate, this Parklane sports a 312-cubic-inch V8, automatic transmission, and a host of interior upgrades. The seller notes it’s so clean you could “eat off the door jams.”

1959 Rambler American Deliveryman

One of only three ever made, this rare Rambler underwent a nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration. Powered by an inline-six and three-speed manual, its engine bay and details are pristine.

1957 Chevrolet Bel Air

The Bel Air represents the peak of 1950s American style. Equipped with a V8, automatic transmission, air conditioning, AM radio, power brakes, and power steering, it’s an iconic classic.

1950 Oldsmobile Wagon

A showstopper with flame accents, this 1950 Oldsmobile has a 5.7L Vortec 350 V8 and four-speed automatic transmission. It combines performance with thoughtful features for enhanced driving pleasure.

1959 Plymouth Suburban Station Wagon

This unrestored Plymouth shows 78,800 original miles. Powered by a 318 polyhead Mopar with a Holly two-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust, it runs smoothly and remains in excellent survivor condition.

1958 Edsel Roundup Two-Door Wagon

A rare, custom six-passenger wagon with V8 power. Co-created by Frank Montelone and George Barris of Barris Kustoms, it’s a one-of-a-kind classic with exceptional craftsmanship.

Classic wagons remain a rare and captivating segment of the automotive world. Currently, Hemmings Marketplace lists around 50 classic wagon offerings, providing plenty of opportunities for enthusiasts to add one of these timeless vehicles to their collection.
